Friday 6/16 Message to Families

Message to Families

Beloved Community,

Last night, we welcomed our newest students and families at our New Family Night. It was exciting to see the excitement and anticipation in the NHHS Class of 2027 as they took their first steps towards beginning high school in the fall. We thank the families for coming and connecting with us, and all the students, volunteers, coaches, boosters and staff who made the evening possible. A special shout out the NHCO who provided the dinner and cooked the pasta.

This upcoming Monday, June 19th, we recognize and honor Juneteenth, as it is a day for us to celebrate, commemorate, and reflect on the Black resilience in American History. Specifically, on June 19, 1865, Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, and shared with more than 250,000 enslaved Black people in the state that they had been freed. This day became known as Juneteenth and is a day for us to celebrate, commemorate, and reflect on the resilience of our African Ancestors. Here is a list of resources and community events Juneteenth Resources 2023. In recognition of the holiday, there will be no school on Monday.

In this Friday message, we are sharing the new community expectation we will begin school with in the fall regarding cell phone use in school. We look forward to developing a strong partnership with families and students on this matter so critical to student health and wellbeing.

Distraction Free School

Thank you to all who participated in the distraction free / mobile device policy refresher committee. Your engagement together with student voice has helped us create a new community expectation and distraction free policy for the 2023-2024 academic school year.

Next school year, starting in the fall of 2023, students will be expected to keep phones and headphones away throughout the academic day. This policy will be upheld throughout the school day and as part of this policy, we will be asking all families and students to sign a distraction free agreement, which includes expectations for phone usage throughout the school day. If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions for our distraction free policy, please complete the Distraction Free School survey
