Friday 11/14 Family Message
Happy Friday!
Wow, it feels like time is flying by. We are eight days away from Thanksgiving Break, November 27 -28. School will release at 2:25pm as usual on Wednesday, November 26th. I hope students take these next eight days to continue to work hard and complete assignments to stay in good standing academically during 2nd quarter. Students will then have another fifteen days before the Winter Break, December 22 – January 2, to continue to work, as the semester ends on January 27th. This allows students only fifteen days after the Winter Break to ensure all their assignments and projects are turned in and completed before Finals Week, January 23,26,27. Thirty-eight days will go by very fast. Ask your student if they are meeting their academic goals. If not, please seek support from their teachers directly, contact a school counselor, or ask their school administrator for support and guidance.
This week it was nice to see learning in action. I enjoyed seeing students in beginning photography learn how to take photos with a busy background, focusing on correct angles, back drop, and camera positioning etc. I also liked seeing students in Business Management work on items they will be selling at the upcoming Horticulture Winter Open House. They are making candles, soaps, salsa, etc. They are really into their products and can’t wait to share them with the public and experience the joy of entrepreneurship. There will also be items from the Baking and Pastries class available for purchase. Come on out and support the Winter Open House on Sunday, November 23rd from 11:00am to 1:00pm at the greenhouse on the Jane Addams Middle School campus. See details about this event with info on how to order your poinsettia and sign up for a wreath-making class by going to the Nathan Hale Urban Farm square site.
I also enjoyed watching students in World History spend time in the library to learn how to document their sources and create annotated bibliographies. The NH library has so many resources and a wealth of knowledge and expertise from Ms. West, our amazing librarian. I encourage all students to utilize our library and all that it has to offer students throughout the day.
Last Friday evening, I attended the fall play, 12 Angry Men. I am still smiling with joy and pride over the amazing performances. I loved seeing our student thespians put on a profound performance that captivated the audience as they came up with a verdict. Hats off to Ms. Delaney – Hanna, her crew and the drama program for the fall play!
Fall sports officially come to an end. Congratulations to the Girls Swim Team who won the District Championship Swim meet this past weekend. They are back-to-back District Champs! The following athletes will be competing at the State Meet today and tomorrow, defending their State Title from last year: Maria B, Aya B, Mia C, Zia G, Avery L, Cleo P, Sanna T, and Chloe W. Congratulations to all our fall sport teams, coaches and fans who supported the NH athletic program. Go Raiders!
Reminder, Winter Sports starts next week. Please be sure that students are registered in FinalForms and they have a current sports physical uploaded in order to try out/attend practice. Check out the schedules on the Metro League website. We look forward to celebrating our fall athletes at the Fall Sports Dessert on Tuesday, November 18th at 7:00pm in the Commons. If you can, please bring a dessert to share.
FAFSA Night is coming for Seniors on Thursday, November 20th at 5:30pm – 7:00pm. Seniors and senior families can find out more about the evening on the NH Financial Aid Night webpage on our website.
Tomorrow, Saturday, November 15th, from 10:00am to 3:00pm is the Seattle Black College Expo at Rainier Beach High School. There will be over 50 colleges present with the potential for seniors to be accepted on the spot; certificate and trade schools will also be on site.
