Friday 3/13 Family Message

Happy Friday the 13th,

Wow, there is nothing like a little winter just before spring. I did not expect to see all white when I opened my door to head to work. I hope your student got to school safely today. We don’t anticipate any future days starting off with snow but this is a reminder regarding the district’s inclement weather policy. Please remind your students to drive slowly and take it easy on the roads.

The Bite of Hale was a great success with our clubs, sports teams, parent groups and departments providing “bites” for the evening in support of our ASB. ASB funds support all clubs, athletics, cultural, and recreational activities at NHHS, so this fundraiser, along with student ASB fees, is critical to the activities and opportunities students experience at school. Thank you to all who joined us for this amazing evening and participated by bringing food, staffing tables, and buying bites! We love this event that brings the entire Nathan Hale community together.

So sad to see our Naha friends leave us this Sunday. They got to enjoy classes with their buddies and the daily rhythms of a Hale student, selling at the student store, manicures, potlucks, the Bite of Hale, field trips to the UW campus and the Seattle Art Museum/Pike Place Market, inner tubing over the weekend, among a few Seattle and Hale experiences. Our Hale students going on the Naha trip look forward to reconnecting with their friends in Okinawa this summer.

This week our math department and students celebrated Pi Day! It was a fun and hectic time since we had over 160 students come and recite digits of the number pi. Being able to say the first 10 digits of pi earned them a piece of pie. Junior, Eliot, was able to recite 678 digits of pi correctly, which is a new school record!

In classrooms, it was nice to see students in History 148 studying and learning about the history of Seattle and the impacts on the Duwamish people, community, and culture. It is so important that students learn about our amazing city and the first people of the land. I was glad I got to share my own experience growing up on the Makah Indian Reservation in Neah Bay, Washington and my pride in my native identity and my cultural heritage with students. I also enjoyed participating in an Econ 120 classroom today and joining their classroom activity teaching students about mutually beneficial exchanges and the power of trading items and being able to make a pitch for their item. Students could not believe that their principal is quick on her feet and can come up with a pitch that was relevant to them and they could relate to. I let them know that sales could possibly be my side hustle, showing them how I would promote music, information, and knowledge by pitching C89.5 wrist bands. Each week I am grateful there is always something to celebrate at Nathan Hale.

March is Music in Our Schools Month. Come celebrate by joining us for the first of 2 music concerts on Tuesday, March 17th at 7 p.m. in Tudor Hall (our Performance Arts Center). This performance will feature the stellar sounds of our Jazz Band, Percussion Ensemble, and Symphonic Band. The event is free.

Spring Sports are underway. We have about 350 students turning out for Spring Sports. Check out the Metro League website and come support Nathan Hale Athletics. We look forward to seeing you all out enjoying NHHS sports. Go Raiders!
