Friday 9/12 Family Message
Happy Friday!
We just finished eight full days of school. It has been an eventful eight days to say the least, and I am grateful for the Nathan Hale staff who keep things rolling and grounded in our commitments to students and the Hale community. Today I would like to recognize that we had many things happening at the school with the new schedule shifts taking place on Thursday and the threat made to our school this afternoon. When threats are made towards the school our biggest priority is to secure the campus and make sure that students and staff are safe. I work as quickly as I can to get messaging out to staff and families as soon as the building is secured. It will always be my intention to let families know what is happening on campus as soon as possible via School Messenger and Talking Points. All school events are on for this evening, and no further safety issues or concerns are present.
Schedule Shift – Starting Thu, 9/18
I do appreciate the parents and students who have reached out to me to share their concerns and frustrations with the bell schedule shifts taking place starting Thursday, September 18th. I recognize the validity of each person’s concerns, and I would like to recognize the situation provides us an opportunity to “reimagine” the possibilities for mentorship time at NHHS together. I am impressed with our student leaders who held an all-school forum to hear from their peers about the schedule change. They provided important feedback to me as I worked with staff to create schedule options we could live with at Nathan Hale. Students will have the opportunity to work collaboratively with staff and school administration to reimagine how the time will benefit students socially, emotionally, mentally and academically. I know together we can land on something that works for all. Moving forward, here is the new bell schedule as voted on by the Nathan Hale staff and school administration today. Please note I may need to adjust lunch assignments and plan to have students’ schedules finalized by Wednesday and shared in mentorship for our Thursday start.
NHHS Lunch & Mentorship Schedule
Rationale: This schedule allows us to reimagine our Nathan Hale mentorship program and how we support students, especially those furthest from educational justice. We may need to make some mentorship class list adjustments with this model. The mentorship committee will be tasked with coming up with a mentorship schedule and work closely with student clubs, activity leaders and grade level teams to bring exciting and much needed things to our student body. In this model support(s) to students can be prioritized.

The shifts to recognize are as follows:
- Students are assigned an A or B lunch based on their Mentorship or (4th period on Wednesday) teacher. Mentorships are organized by grade level with six affinity mentorships currently functioning at Nathan Hale. *** Have your student locate their mentorship teachers name to find what lunch they have (e.g. Davis -A lunch).
- This new schedule has 21 mentorships at A lunch and 26 mentorships at B lunch. Thus, allowing more students adequate access to get through the lunch line without stress or wait. This schedule shift also allows students who access the SPS Skills Center program and running start programs throughout the city more opportunities to get their lunch.
- Mentorship time at Nathan Hale is valued time allocated for students to get academic support, connect with staff and peers, get mentorship, build community with peers, meet with community partners, and allow all school student led events and activities.
- Mentorship is a credit bearing course at Nathan Hale and students are expected to attend their mentorship class daily. Students who skip mentorship may jeopardize their graduation credits.
- Students who skip mentorship class may result in loss of off campus privileges and eligibility for extra-curricular activities, such as sports and clubs.
In classrooms
It was nice to get out and into some classrooms this week. I enjoyed seeing students share their culture and heritage in their social studies class. I liked seeing students learn how to use a note catcher tool to capture thoughts, ideas, questions to engage and prepare for a class seminar. I loved seeing staff working 1:1 with a student to ensure they had a program that allowed for cross enrollment at Hale and another SPS school. When students know what they want to do it makes me smile. SPS has so many possibilities for our students. I also enjoyed seeing staff prepare students to engage and recognize their impact when discussing tough or sensitive topics in class during ethnic studies. The greatest gift we can give our young people are tools to navigate the world and skills to be successful in society as honorable, skillful, thinking, global citizens.

Final Thoughts
Please know that we take safety in our buildings very seriously. Any threat made by a student or community member that impacts the safety and security of our students will have an immediate response from myself and district staff. Maintaining a safe learning environment is our highest priority, and we encourage everyone to continue sharing any concerns. You can use the SPS Safe Schools Hotline 206-252-0510 to report any threats to our school. This phone number is managed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me. I will be happy to speak with you directly. Thank you for your support and “Intel” in keeping our school safe.
Have a good weekend.
