Friday 2/14 Family Message

Summary : Online Registration and other news for students and families.

Happy Friday,

Blood drive day at Hale. Students are always taking care of the community and leading for change within our community.

This has been a great week at Hale. Our Black Student Union (BSU) hosted a nice Black History Month Assembly yesterday. They brought in keynote speakers to share their story, and the impact historical black leaders have had on their life and leadership as young adults. Mohammed Abdi, City Councilmen from Tukwila, WA, had the students repeat after him … I am … I will be … I am a leader. His inspiring words spoke volumes to the importance of having goals and dreams and not allowing anyone stand in your way.

Wednesday was our first day of Registration 2025-26. It was a busy day for Mentorship teachers as they helped students start their registration process. You can locate registration information on our Online Registration webpage on the Nathan Hale High School website. Please make sure that your student is registered before February 25th. Thank you in advance.

I was also proud to see so many families attend our Future Family Night on Thursday evening. It is always great to celebrate our wonderful school and community. Student leaders rocked it with the school tours and Q&A session with students and families. If you or a friend missed this event, information can be found on our school website.

Last week our 10th grade Language Arts students in Ms. McKittrick, Mr. Mulder and Mr. Uhlman’s classes wrapped up their study of Shakespeare by performing adaptations of Othello and Macbeth. This full day of theatre celebrated the bard, poetry, and most importantly, student excellence. Experiences such as these where students exhibit their work in a public space are an essential part of deep learning. This event marks another example of reviving Hale traditions suspended during COVID.

This week it was nice to see students learning about privilege and the impacts of privilege on society. Students discussed what privilege means and researched the many types of privilege they may face as young adults. I enjoyed seeing students learning breathe-in and breathe-out strategies to complete research projects and art pieces centered around Black Lives Matter. Their art pieces are powerful and represent the beauty of being amongst a diverse community at Hale. I also enjoyed seeing students discuss the critical attributes of an empire. When students can work in small groups in a safe learning space so much magic happens within their discussions. They can explain what they are learning. Why they are learning it. And show how they know they learned it. All of which can be displayed throughout our building.

Students in our theatre program are working hard in preparation for their upcoming spring musical, The Addams Family. Save the dates: May 8th, 9th, 10th, 16th and 17th, and come on out and support our students. Tickets will be available on the Nathan Hale Theatre website.

We have rescheduled our snow-canceled Unity in the Community Day to Wednesday, March 5th. We look forward to seeing students engage in meaningful activities planned and organized by them. They have over forty different workshops for their peers to experience.

This week we have some exciting things happening in NHHS athletics! We have teams in post season play. Last night, Girls Basketball defeated Evergreen by a final of 32-16 to secure the program’s first birth in districts since 2012!  The Raiders will take on Cedarcrest at Cedarcrest High School on Saturday at 4pm in a double-elimination game. We are only two wins from making it to State for the first time in program history! Boys Swim & Dive are competing in District Prelims today at Hazen Pool and again tomorrow at 1:30pm for District Finals. Our Girls Gymnastics team district competition is at 10am tomorrow at Ballard High. The Winter Sports Dessert Banquet is on Wednesday, February 26th at 7pm in the Commons. Sports waiver forms for winter sports will be due on Friday, March 7th.

Spring Sports start March 3rd! Please make sure you register in Final Forms and upload a copy of your physical. Sports physicals are free and convenient at the Teen Health Center. Contact them at 206-302-1840 or stop by after mid-winter break to schedule an appointment. Find Athletics and Final Forms information on our Nathan Hale Athletics webpage.

Semester 1 grades are now viewable on The Source. In an effort to reduce waste, Nathan Hale no longer mass-mails hard copies of report cards. To see your report card, log into your Source account and click on “Performance and Progress Reports” on the left-hand side of the screen. If you’re having trouble logging onto The Source, please contact: sourcesupport@seattleschools.org

When we return from mid-winter break on Monday, February 24th, we will be welcoming students and staff from Naha High School in Okinawa, Japan who will be shadowing their host students in classes for about 3 weeks. We will be celebrating 50 years of this student exchange this year!

We encourage your students to get rest during their break, spend time reading, minimize time spent on their phones, and enjoy meaningful time with family and friends. We will see them when we return to the building on February 24th. School will start at 8:50 a.m.

In close, we appreciate the city’s support of the two levies this past week! Thank you for voting! It takes a village, and we appreciate you in SPS.
