Japanese at Nathan Hale High School

The Japanese language program at Nathan Hale High School offers students a rich opportunity to develop both linguistic skills and cultural understanding. The curriculum is aligned with College in the High School (CIHS) through North Seattle College, allowing students to earn up to 15 transferable college credits by completing Japanese 1, 2, and 3. These are aligned with JAPN& 121, 122, and 123, and students can receive 5 credits per year. Tuition for these college credits is currently free for eligible students.

Students can also participate in the Naha Club, which organizes cultural activities and helps welcome visiting students from Naha High School, our sister school in Okinawa, Japan. Each spring, a group of Naha students stays in Seattle and attends Nathan Hale for about two and a half weeks. In the summer, some of our students travel to Okinawa to attend school and stay with host families.

Although travel to Japan is no longer coordinated by Seattle Public Schools, the tradition continues through an independent nonprofit called the Bridge to Naha Foundation. This organization manages the summer travel opportunity. Participation is optional and not part of a school-sponsored activity. The program is organized separately by the nonprofit and supported by staff, alumni, and community volunteers.
