Friday 12/2 Message to Families

Beloved Families,

I hope you had a great month of November and a strong start to December. The weather certainly did! We had an unexpected weather event this past Wednesday but we’re glad to be back together yesterday after the power was restored. The missed day will not be added to the end of the school year. We are sharing weather-related remote learning information in this message in order for all to be prepared in the event we have another building closure.

Remote Learning

In order to avoid school being canceled due to snow or hazardous travel, our school district has determined that we will shift to remote learning should that be needed. We ask that your student makes sure to take their laptop and charger home each day and be prepared to log on from home to their classes in Teams at the start of any remote-learning school day. The school district should notify you via SchoolMessenger (robo-email) and phone call, as well as post on the Seattle Public Schools website for any news regarding school closure or transition to remote school. Students should come to the NHHS Technology Support Center on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 8:30am to 3:45pm if they have any laptop related issues.

If your family is in need of internet access for online learning, SPS is highly recommending that families apply for the Affordable Connectivity Program for the 2022-2023 school year and beyond. Hotspots will be made available, in very limited capacity, to eligible students whose families have first applied for ACP eligibility. If your family is not eligible for ACP, please contact your student’s counselor.

Upcoming Music Concerts

The Nathan Hale Music Department has two upcoming concerts. Join us on Thursday, December 8th for the Instrumental Music concert. This concert will feature performances by the Concert Orchestra, Jazz Band and Symphonic Band playing tunes from movies from many eras. On Thursday, December 15th the Concert Choir and Vocal Jazz will be holding their concert featuring some wintery tunes to get you in the holiday spirit. Both concerts will start at 7:00pm in the Performing Arts Center.

Tutoring Help

Free tutoring is available from 4:30pm to 7:30pm Tuesday and Wednesday evenings at the Lake City Library. The number of high school students has been especially low between 6:15 and 7:30pm, so there will be plenty of help available. Highly skilled tutors are there to help – send your students their way!

Future Volunteer Opportunity

The Winter Ball will be held on Friday, January 27, 2023 at the Leif Erikson Lodge in Ballard. The junior class ASB is happy and willing to involve anyone who is interested in helping out with the Winter Ball. Ways to help include donating food, or helping bring or design decorations, or volunteering to chaperone this fun event. Please email them if you are interested in helping out with the dance! nhhs2024asb@gmail.com.

Volunteer Application and Clearing Process

For those interested in volunteering in any Seattle Public School, including Nathan Hale, or for school-sponsored events like the Winter Ball, the district has an application process which includes a background check.

For new volunteers (who have never volunteered with a Seattle Public school previously),

For returning volunteers (who have previously completed the volunteer process).

Once cleared to volunteer, please make sure to sign-in at the Main Office before heading to your volunteer location in the building. You will be asked to provide your photo ID the first time you sign in to volunteer. If you have questions about the volunteer process or would like to confirm your volunteer status, please email Rae Keyes at rkkeyes@seattleschools.org in the Main Office.

Have a restful weekend.

With love,

William Jackson, Ed.D. (he, him)
